American
Express South Africa Internet Privacy Statement |
 |
 |
This Privacy Statement is published
in South Africa for South African citizens and permanent
residents and relates only to South African American
Express issued products and services. If you have any
American Express product that is not issued by American
Express in South Africa, please refer to the Worldwide
Sites page of the American Express Web site to select
another country and review the privacy provisions at
that Web site.
Protecting your privacy is important
to us. We hope the following statement will help you
understand how American Express collects, uses and safeguards
the personal information you provide to us on our Web
site.
The following are all parts of the
Statement:

 |
Information Collection
|
 |
 |
When you browse americanexpress.co.za
and have not registered for any online service from
American Express, you browse anonymously. Personal information
- such as your name, address, phone number or e-mail
address - is not collected as you browse. American Express
does, however, use "cookies" to collect information
about how our site is used. Information, such as the
server your computer is logged on to, your browser type
(for example, Netscape or Internet Explorer), and whether
you responded to an American Express banner ad or e-mail
is collected and tracked in aggregate. This information
is used for the purpose of measuring response rates
to banner ads and e-mail offers.

for purposes such as correspondence, site registration,

Personalisation
|
 |
 |
If you are known to us as a registered user of an American
Express online service, we, that is, the American Express
group of companies worldwide, including other organisations
which offer American Express products and services,
may combine information about your use of americanexpress.co.za
and the online product or service you utilise with certain
other online and offline information we have about you
as an American Express customer, including details of
where and how you use our products and services and
charges for such products and services, as well as information
you have provided to us and information available from
external sources, such as merchants and marketing organisations,
in order to customize your online experience and present
you with relevant online and offline offers and updates.
We also use a "cookie" to enable our server to recognize
you as a registered American Express online service
user when you re-enter our site.

Information Use
|
 |
 |
We may use information you have given us, for example,
to provide a service, ensure proper billing, measure consumer
interest in our various services and inform you about
products and services. If you provide us with your e-mail
address or have done so in the past, or if we obtain your
e-mail address from another source, we may send you e-mail
offers. These offers may be based on information you provided
in your initial transaction with us, in surveys, from
information that may indicate purchasing preferences and
lifestyle, as well as information available from external
sources, such as merchants and marketing organisations.
These e-mail offers come directly from American Express.
When we send e-mails to you, we may
be able to identify information about your e-mail address,
such as whether you can read graphic-rich html e-mails.
If your e-mail address is html-enabled, we may choose
to send you graphic-rich html e-mails.
Please note that we do not provide
your e-mail address to our business partners. However,
we may send you offers on behalf of our business partners.
Keep in mind that if you take advantage of an offer
from an American Express business partner and become
their customer, they may independently wish to send
offers to you. In this case, you will need to inform
them separately if you wish to decline receiving future
offers from them.
Our goal is to deliver offers to people
who we believe will find them relevant and of value.
Offers are developed and managed under strict conditions
designed to safeguard the security and privacy of customer
personal information. However, at any time you may request
not to receive these offers.

data protection laws may not be as comprehensive as
in the European Union. However, in these cases, American
Express has taken appropriate steps to ensure the same

About Cookies
Cookies were originally designed to help a Web site
distinguish a user's browser as a previous visitor and
thus save and remember any preferences that may have
been set while the user was browsing the site. A cookie
is a small string of text that a Web site can send to
your browser. A cookie cannot retrieve any other data
from your hard drive, pass on computer viruses or capture
your E-mail address. Currently, Web sites use cookies
to enhance the user's visit; in general, cookies can
securely store a user's ID and password, personalise
home pages, identify which parts of a site have been
visited or keep track of selections in a "shopping cart".
If you are just browsing americanexpress.co.za,
a cookie identifies only your browser. If you become
a registered user on an American Express Web site (with
a designated user ID and password), we use cookies so
that we can provide customized information that we believe
will be of value to you based on preferences indicated,
other information we have about you as an American Express
customer, as well as information available from external
sources such as the Electoral Roll. It is possible to
set your browser to inform you when a cookie is being
placed - this way, you have the opportunity to decide
whether to accept the cookie. If you are just browsing
our site and are not a registered user, you do not have
to accept a cookie and you may still continue utilising
the site. However, if you are visiting a site where
you will be accessing your confidential account information
(such as Checking Your Bill), you must accept that site's
cookies as they are essential for site administration
and security. By accepting a cookie, keep in mind that
your choice to decline E-mail offers remains unaffected.
Here is how to set your cookie preferences:
Netscape Navigator 4:
Select "Preferences" from the "Edit" menu. From the
"Preferences" menu, select "Advanced", and several options
for cookies will be listed in the lower right of the
menu. Additionally, you may select "Help" for more details.
For further information about the Netscape browser and
use of cookies, visit Netscape's Web site.
Microsoft Internet Explorer 4:
Select Options from the View menu. Choose the Advanced
menu and scroll to the section labelled "Cookies", where
several options are listed. For further information
about the Microsoft Internet Explorer browser and use
of cookies, visit Microsoft's Web site.
AOL:
If you are using AOL v3.0 for Windows 95: Select Preferences
from the Members menu. Click on the WWW icon and select
Advanced. Modify your preference if you wish to be warned
before accepting cookies.
If you are using the following AOL
browsers, you will not be able to set cookie preferences
since these browsers automatically accept cookies: AOL
v3.0 for Windows 3.0, using AOL's proprietary browser
or AOL's version of Microsoft Internet Explorer v3.0;
AOL for the MAC, using AOL's version of Microsoft Internet
Explorer 2.1.
All other earlier versions of AOL browsers
do not support cookies, and therefore cannot authenticate
you as a registered user on American Express Web sites
that involve sending or receiving personal account information.
