AF/KLM Takes Minority Stake in Australia - 2009/01/14
ALITALIA and Air France/KLM have reached an agreement to launch a new strategic partnership, cemented by Air France/KLM taking a minority stake of 25% in Alitalia.

The agreement ends months of speculation and uncertainty and came on the last day of the Italian carrier’s operation as the "old" Alitalia.

The partnership will see Air France/KLM gaining greater access to the Italian market and Alitalia expanding its network and regaining its position in the international markets.

The Air France/KLM group will have three seats out of a total 19 on Alitalia’s board of directors and two seats out of nine making up the executive committee.

The partnership will be based on a multi-hub strategy in which Paris Charles-de-Gaulle, Amsterdam Schiphol, Rome Fiumicino and Milan Malpensa will feature on an equal basis.

Synergies deriving mainly from network optimisation and revenue management will be achieved over the next three years amounting to €720m for Alitalia and €90m for Air France/KLM.

The implementation of this agreement is subject to the approval of various competition authorities, including the EU and Alitalia shareholders.
